Anglicans & Catholics in England launch joint Lenten prayer week

Archbishop Justin and Cardinal Nichols announce week of prayer for church social action projects

The Archbishop of Canterbury and the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster have launched a joint initiative this Lent to encourage people to pray for the work churches do to support people in need in their parishes and beyond.

From Passion Sunday on 6 April to Palm Sunday on 13 April, Archbishop Justin and Cardinal Nichols will give thanks to God daily for this essential act of service, and pray for his blessing on the work of the churches.

They will also visit church projects to hear from participants and to see how communities are being transformed.

Their hope is that by joining together in prayer and encouraging others to join them they will foster the work of the church in strengthening communities and helping those in need across the country.

Get involved

If you would like to join Archbishop Justin and Cardinal Nichols by committing to prayer, you will find daily resources from April 6th-13th on both www.archbishopofcanterbury.org and the Catholic Church in England and Wales website. Simple printable prayer resources will also be available.

Throughout the week people will be encouraged to tweet about how churches are helping those in need in their local area using the hashtag #ListenToGod

In July following a meeting with Pope Francis, Archbishop Welby said that he was in talks with the Vatican about a new initiative that would link the two Churches in their efforts against poverty.
