Communiqué

The fourth meeting of the Anglican-Methodist International Commission for Unity in Mission (AMICUM) took place near Baltimore, Maryland, 10-16 February 2012, hosted by the World Methodist Council, at the Bon Secours Spiritual Center. Members of the Commission worshipped together morning and evening, and the Eucharist was celebrated according to both traditions.

The Commission spent time considering the ministry of oversight in a way that honours the traditions of both world families. It paid careful attention to how Anglicans and Methodists have expressed the form and understanding of mission, episcopal ministry, and apostolicity.

The Commission continues to take careful note of bilateral conversations between Anglicans and Methodists in a variety of places around the world. In listening to these reports the Commission was able to further its understanding of the various and diverse challenges posed by ecumenical dialogue.

Considerable benefit was gained from meeting with some of those in the dialogue taking place in the United States of America between The Episcopal Church and The United Methodist Church. This gave the Commission an opportunity to learn more about the way that that dialogue is seeking Full Communion between the two churches. Paying attention to local and national developments continues to enable AMICUM to reflect further on how it might best resource Anglican-Methodist relationships throughout the world, and to propose ways towards the visible unity between Anglicans, Methodists and United and Uniting Churches.

The Commission is grateful for the warm hospitality given by the congregation of Mt Pisgah Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Baltimore, where they worshipped on the Sunday morning. This enabled the Commission to gain an insight into the breadth of worship styles within the Methodist family and to have a particular engagement with one of the historic black Methodist Churches.

After worship, the Commission visited Lovely Lane United Methodist Church, the home of the congregation which once met at the Lovely Lane Meeting House, the historic site of the Christmas Conference 1784. At this Conference the Methodist Episcopal Church in America was born, when Thomas Coke ordained Francis Asbury to the superintendency of the new church.

Members began to draft sections of the final report, which will be nearing completion in February 2013, when the Commission will meet for the last time in Jamaica, hosted by the Anglican Communion.
