The Canadian Church in the Third Millennium is the theme of a national conference featuring speakers from eight Christian denominations across theological and liturgical spectrums, June 4 and 5 at St. Peter Cobourg, Ontario. The conference is entitled Restless Gods: the New Story about What’s Happening in Canada’s Churches; the keynote speaker of the Conference will be Professor Reg Bibby of the University of Lethbridge.

Kairos, a new coalition of Canadian churches, has launched an education and action campaign to prepare for next July’s G8 meeting of world leaders in Kananaskis. People can participate in the campaign by signing a prepared statement called Call to Account which can be found at many Christian churches. The campaign is one of the first efforts of Kairos, established nationally in July 2001. The new partnership is a coalition of Canadian church agencies dedicated to promoting human rights, justice and peace, viable human development and solidarity. It brings together 10 previously independent inter-Church coalitions, whose concerns and work are similar in nature. The new partnership is run by a fourteen member board and a twenty-six member staff. Priority areas for Kairos include international human rights, global economic justice, environment and ecological justice, Canadian social development, aboriginal peoples and education. A fifteen member committee is working on each priority area. The Canadian Kairos is connected with many similar coalitions around the world and has one of the “strongest social analysis teams in Canada, perhaps in the world,” noted Fr. Richard, who represents the Canadian Religious Conference on the Kairos board.
