To promote Christian Unity and Dialogue among World Religions

The October launching of the 1st Irénée Beaubien, s.j. Ecumenical Institute by the Canadian Centre for Ecumenism will assemble noted experts in ecumenism (Christian unity) and interreligious dialogue. Fifty years after the foundation of the Centre and the publication of the Vatican Council II decree on ecumenism, this event will create a space where the theory and the practice of ecumenism can intersect and serve as a platform for future action. Pioneers who laboured to establish dialogue when this was not the popular thing to do will pass on their experience and the knowledge gleaned from their efforts to a younger generation passionate about overcoming differences and working together. Society will reap the benefits.

The Irénée Beaubien Ecumenical Institute will bring together people from different churches and different religions for two days of conferences, October 24-25, in the Anglican diocese’s Fulford Hall in Montréal located at 1444 Union Avenue. Participants will learn from some fourteen church leaders and specialists in the fields of inter-church and interfaith dialogue as these speakers explore the understanding and the practice of ecumenism from different angles. Question periods following each talk will provide the opportunity for clarification and exchange.

In the week following the conferences, guided visits to a synagogue, a mosque and an Orthodox church will give a taste of the rich spiritual traditions of our neighbours.

A workshop on icon painting will also be offered. Under the guidance of a Romanian Orthodox specialist, those who choose this workshop will follow the basic techniques in painting their own icon while they discover the rich beauty and spirituality inherent in Christian icons.

The Ecumenical Institute is named in honour of Fr. Irénée Beaubien, s.j., a pioneer in the evolution of the ecumenical movement in Canada and founder of the Canadian Centre for Ecumenism (1963). Fr. Beaubien was decorated as an Officer of the Order of Canada by the Governor General in 2003 and awarded the “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” medal by the Pope in 2012.

Institut Père Irénée Beaubien, s.j. pour unité chrétienne et dialogue interreligieux, 24 – 31 octobre 2014

L’Institut Père Irénée Beaubien,s.j., un rassemblement des expertes en œcuménisme (unité chrétienne) et en dialogue interreligieux ouvrira ses portes entre 24 et 31 octobre 2014. Les activités d’Institut Père Irénée Beaubien, s.j. visent à réunir plus de 100 personnes de différentes confessions chrétiennes et de différentes religions. Pendant les deux jours de conférences (le 24 et le 25 octobre 2014) dans la salle Fulford Hall du Diocèse Anglican à Montréal, 1444 avenue Union, H3A 2B8, quatorze spécialistes aborderont l’œcuménisme sous angles différentes et seront questionnés.

50 ans après la fondation du Centre canadien d’œcuménisme et le décret sur l’œcuménisme du concile Vatican II il est important de croiser la théorie et la pratique et d’établir une base pour des actions futures. Transmettre l’expérience riche des pionniers, ainsi que les concepts déjà conçus à la génération des jeunes passionnés au dialogue et l’unité chrétienne est bénéfique pour la société actuelle. De nombreux défis sont toujours à relever aujourd’hui ainsi que la question comment partager notre foi.

Trois pèlerinages interreligieux pendant les journées suivantes permettront aux participants à découvrir une église, une synagogue et une mosquée.

Une série des ateliers sur la peinture des icônes est ouverte pour donner aux intéressés des techniques de base, mais aussi pour aider à découvrir la beauté et la spiritualité des icônes chrétiennes.
